On Saturday, April 18, 2009, AVP/NY held our annual Forum Day at Bedford Hills--a maximum security women's prison in Westchester County. This was the first Forum Day to be held in a women's prison!
Fifteen outside AVP volunteers and more than twenty inside facilitators gathered for a day of fun, celebration of AVP at Bedford, order-in pizza!! and honoring Allison Dench for her thirty years of AVP at Bedford Hills!
Mindful Margaret Lechner (outside coordinator) and Jazzy Jasmine (inside coordinator) together with the inside team put together a program that included a lively Blanket Game (after hearing people's adjective names only once!) and four small group discussions on women's issues, outreach to youth at Bedford Hills, anger management workshops and developing a weekly support group.
Some exciting and pragmatic ideas came out of these discussions and it is clear that AVP Bedford is charged! and moving forward!
We will hear from some of the voices that make up AVP Bedford in our next (summer) newsletter.
