My First AVP Forum Day

A letter from Calvin A. Hall, aka Cool Cal, AVP Clerk, Otisville Prison

I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation for all the men and women that worked together to make the AVP Forum Day on May 1st at Otisville Correctional Facility such a tremendous success.  It was my first time at such an event, and it simply opened me up to a whole new perspective on the world and on my own life.  Being able to participate in the exercises and just having the chance to listen to all the wisdom that was imparted left me now to be better equipped to re-evaluate and identify issues within me that I once was unable to recognize.

Upon my release, I plan to promote and be a part of this wonderful program.  I feel a sense of bittersweet with the whole experience because this was my first time as well as my last time to be able to participate in this wonderful Forum Day.

The commitment and passion that all the facilitators had given to teach and every one of us truely touched me.  Everyone was prepared, motivated and knowledgeable in all the topics presented.  It was especially great to see Courageous Carolyn again!

Since I have been working as the AVP Clerk [at Otisville Prison], I have learned so much everyday.  This program has opened up my mind to concepts that were frowned upon to discuss among my peers.  Words like diversity were just that--words.  Through AVP, these words have been put into action in a relevant and insightful way.  I have come to understand now and realize that with faith, a plan, and pure determination, I can achieve any goal that I have set for myself.  In life, I have learned the possibilities are endless.  My eyes have been opened to new ideas, and I will invest time and energy into helping develop and promote the virtues of AVP that have so wonderfully changed my life upon my release.

Through the AVP Program and the AVP Forum Day we all can make a difference, no matter where we are or who we are.  We just want to have it--that is the first step!!

God bless the team of facilitators, both outside and inside, whom without your dedication, life experience, and vulnerability, this program could never touch as many people's lives as it already has.  I have learned so much from each one of you, and I am a better man today for the gifts of knowledge that you have all blessed me with.

I hope that I have been able to give in some small measure, as much as I have received.  We must continue to move forward and strive to reach the common goal to educate and break down the barriers, not only in our homes but also in our society itself.  There is true unity in diversity!  I challenge each of you today to continue with passion the work you have started.  Together, we can realize a better tomorrow where the walls of indifference can be torn down and the strength of the human spirit can rise up in triumph against violence, abuse, and prejudice.

love,
